It is that time of the year once again and ITEK is all out to harvest what was sown many years ago. When one goes out to sow it is the best seed that one selects and takes to the prepared ground. Similarly, ITEK endeavours to give the best there is to her students. ITEK prepares the ground and indeed ITEK sows the seed. We are responsible for teacher education at all levels. If the primary school teacher is poorly trained ITEK is answerable, if it is the Grade V teacher it is the same thing and so is a graduate teacher. When these teachers are successful it is our pride. When a primary school teacher is trained, the process prepares a foundation for train ing a grade five teacher which in turn forms the basis for training a university graduate teacher.

It is a pleasant moment for me to welcome you once again to the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo on the occasion of the 10th Graduation ceremony. I thank God Almighty who has kept us alive to this day! Today, ITEK announces a contribution of 836 well trained and skilled men and women to the national labour force. ITEK's pledge to the nation is to train the human resource. For this we give glory to God. ITEK is a large family, whose history dates back to 1948 when the student enrolment stood at only 15. The Institution whose beginning was that humble, has continued to grow both in number of students and staff, as well as academic and professional programmes offered. All the Primary and National Teachers' Colleges in Uganda and the Uganda National Institute for Special Education, UNISE, are connected to ITEK for academic and professional guidance: to ensure maintenance of high standards. This by any measure is no mini responsibility. It is a challenge which in itself is a manifestation of the trust the nation has in the potential and competence of ITEK in the field of education.

In a bid to promote information and knowledge sharing, Kyambogo University Library services has re-invigorated the idea of publishing a periodical library newsletter to share their views with the concerned stakeholders and the public. What is contained in the newsletter depicts: achievements and challenges experienced in course of time. In this issue the library highlights development of its 2nd strategic plan and some inspiring articleson literacy campaign in conjunction with Book Aid International, a brief on the stakeholders' workshop and other aspects of experiences of library staff in the course of their duties. Library staff wish to invite other members of University community to participate in the production of this periodical publication by: writing articles on their views of the library, reviewing articles of library staff any other constructive comments and contributions that lead to improving the publication. With high anticipation of useful contributions, the editorial team wishes you enjoyable reading.

Hon. Tayebwa Thomas, the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North has advised members of the Kyambogo University Academic Staff Association (KYUASA) to dialogue embrace dialogue as a way of solving misunderstandings, discontent and presenting demands instead of strikes and anarchy. “You are the people killing your own university and tainting its image with endless strikes” He said. He wondered why people quarrel and fight over public matters yet in the near future they are going to be history. He further urged KYUASA leadership to wisely use their positions and speak for the university not against it. “As leaders of KYUASA, you are ambassadors of Kyambogo University and you are expected to paint a good picture of Kyambogo. Don’t wash your dirty linen in public” Advised Tayebwa.

A total of 8,892 students graduated from Kyambogo University during the 16th graduation ceremony that started from Wednesday, 11th December 2019 to Friday, 13th December 2019. The 3-days’ function saw 8,892 graduands (4,877 male and 4,015 female) get their PhDs, Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates in various fields. Two graduands, Bamuwamye Michael and Gafuma Samuel, obtained their PhDs in Food Technology while 187 graduands obtained 1st class degrees. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Visitor of the University who was the Chief Guest at the 16th graduation ceremony, praised the leadership of Kyambogo University for the new innovations exhibited during the graduation ceremony describing them as a renaissance that Africa needs. “In Kyambogo you are beginning to wake up. There is actually renaissance at Kyambogo. Kyambogo has got out of Kulambala (sleep),” President observed. President Museveni was visibly happy about the achievements that included: computerized weaving loom, the making of cloth using banana fibres, telecommunications engineering, leather tanning, ceramics and the processing of iron ore, food technology where banana starch is used for making bread, the making of biomedical equipment and the technology of pumping out oil from the ground.

On Saturday, January 25, 2020, His Grace, StanleyNtagali, the retiring Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda bid farewell to the Kyambogo Community. During his farewell sermon at Kakumba Chapel, Kyambogo University, the Archbishop gave a moving testimony of his journey that displays God’s faithfulness and power. He revealed how his ministry journey started in the remote village of Wambabya in greater Hoima as a catechist – the lowest rank in the Anglican Church. From that level, he served as a missionary in Amudat, Karamoja for many years before taking on the roles of Cathedral Vicar, Diocesan Secretary and later Provincial Secretary. He was then elected first bishop of Masindi Kirata Diocese, the position he served for eight years before rising to the helm as Archbishop. He has served as Archbishop for seven years and will retire on 01st March 2020

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has appreciated the exemplary services offered by Kyambogo University. The Prime Minister said this on Tuesday, April 28,2020 at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala while receiving relief items that were donated by the university as their contribution in the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic. The Prime Minister further thanked all Ugandans for their generosity, support, patience and understanding amidst challenges that came with the fight against COVID19. He further revealed thatthis fight led by H.E Gen.Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda is succeeding because of the cooperation and solidarity by Ugandans. He stressed that while Uganda isn’t doing badly in the fight against COVID 19, there’s no reason for complacency but to instead continue working together with government till this disease is completely defeated.Kyambogo University Management and staff contribution included five tonnes of maize floor and one hundred boxes of bar soap. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka who led the team that delivered items thanked Management and Staff for supporting the cause. He requested that the relief items be distributed to Banda and communities around Kyambogo University and the Kyambogo University exemplary - Rugunda Kyambogo university team takes group photo with the Rt. Kyambogo University remains a hub of innovations even during this COVID lockdown. Mr. Nyangkori Christopher is a technician; he heads plumbing and sanitation section under the Department of Estates and Works. He has invented a free touch washing equipment to help in hand washing during this COVID season. Nyangkori said he got the idea of inventing this equipment when he visited Banda market during this lockdown and found people washing hands while touching the tap handle and after washing, they would use the same “washed hands” to close the tap. Also many people would touch the same soap several times and he realized it was not hygienic especially in this COVID-19 period. With this, he started thinking of how one can wash hands without touching soap and the tap. Being a technical person in plumbing, Christopher developed an idea of making a completely free touch washing equipment. He developed a self-closing water valve system which is inside the water tank. When one steps on the pedal, the system opens up the valve for the water to flow out. When one releases the foot from the pedal, the system automatically closes the water outflow. There is an attached container to accommodate liquid soap and when one steps on the foot pedal, the soap is released for use. It has a provision for solid soap as well, where a bar of soap is placed in the dispenser and it keeps releasing small particles of soap to use. The wasted water drains directly to the drainage system through a manhole. In places where there is no manhole, there can be a creation of a soak away pit to drain the wasted water.
